A Smile from Heaven
Reflections on the Life of St. Catherine of Siena |
|
By Sr. Mary Jean Dorcy, O.P. |
|
Lively observations
on the amazing life and tumultuous times of this energetic and lovable
saint. “The calendar drips with mystics who could do nothing but weep....
One of her early companions phrased it so nicely about Catherine: ‘She
passed among us like a smile.’” |

St. Martin de Porres: Father of the Poor |
|
By Theo Stearns. |
|
We receive many requests for a life of our patron. Here is an exciting
short life of St. Martin de Porres who faced many of the same problems
that plague our own day. Born in 1600’s Lima, Peru, St. Martin was a
biracial child born out of wedlock and rejected by his own father. Son of
a working mother, Martin lived joyfully and selflessly serving others. He
was trained as a physician and showed great compassion towards the poor,
the sick and the dying, often working miracles on their behalf. His life
as a Dominican lay brother was lived in utter simplicity and humility, but
was also marked by many miracles and marvels.
Read how St. Martin bilocated to save his sister’s marriage, preached in
the Orient without leaving Lima, instructed and consoled slaves, passed
through locked doors, predicted the future, saved his confreres’ vocations
through supernatural knowledge, raised a dead pet to life, rid the
monastery of mice without harming a single one, and many other astonishing
facts!
Fascinating — you won’t be able to put it down! |

Apostle of the Rosary |
|
Blessed Bartolo Longo
by Ann Brown |
|
Fascinating, brief life of an amazing layman. Born in 1841, Bartolo was a
restless soul searching for truth. Caught up in the tide of liberalism
sweeping through the universities at the time, he turned to the occult
until a devout friend changed the course of his life. Fearing for his
salvation, Bartolo vowed to promote the Rosary in an obscure Italian
village. However, with God’s grace, his small initiative grew to become a
world-famous shrine (Our Lady of the Rosary at Pompeii) and a city devoted
to charitable work. Many photos. |

St. Catherine of Siena |
|
By Alice Curtayne |
|
Stigmatist, miracle-worker, Doctor of the Church, patroness of Italy, she
brought the papacy back to Rome from France, lived many years without
eating, and brought thousands of souls to Christ. Catherine lived as a
tertiary in her home and was influential in the turbulent politics of her
time, all the while living deeply united to Christ to whom she was
mystically espoused. A strong and fearless woman who did not hesitate to
rebuke and advise kings and even the Pope when necessary. She died at only
33 — an amazing saint! Gives much historical background along with the
story of Catherine’s life. |

A Man of the Beatitudes |
|
By Luciana Frassati, sister of the Blessed |
|
An eyewitness account of the life of Pier Giorgio Frassati (1901-1925), a
handsome, athletic and fun-loving young man from a prominent but troubled
Italian family, who was beatifi ed by Pope John Paul II. From a privileged
background, he turned to a life devoted to working with the poor, and was
a courageous witness of Christian faith and charity to many others. Deeply
spiritual, Pier Giorgio sometimes spent entire nights in Eucharistic
adoration before going mountain climbing early the next morning! He died
of polio at the early age of 24. Fascinating reading. Contains photos. |

My Brother Pier Giorgio: His Last Days |
|
By Luciana Frassati, sister of the Blessed |
|
From the heart of his sister, Luciana, we receive this gripping first-hand
testimony of Pier Giorgio’s last week on earth. In his final days, his
Christian character was revealed in an extraordinary way—his devotion to
friends and family, his longing to marry the girl he loved, his concern
for the poor, and above all his acceptance of God’s will. In the end, his
family was astonished by the huge multitude that formed his funeral
procession—finally realizing that Pier Giorgio was destined to belong to
the whole world. Recounted with incredible detail and love. No one will
come away from reading this book unchanged. Photos. |
